Leo Driedger, best known for his contributions to Canadian sociology, to the study of ethnicity, and to the sociology of Mennonite and other Anabaptist religious groups, was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 1928. As a scholar and professor of Sociology at the University of Manitoba, he was the author of numerous books on these themes.
During the late 1950s and early 1960s, he lived in Newton, Kansas and served the General Conference Mennonite Church under the Board of Christian Service, as the Associate Secretary Director of Voluntary Service (ca. 1958-1962). By the mid 1960s he was living in Winnipeg and serving as a Canadian elected member of the Board of Christian Service and its Peace and Social Concerns Committee.
